What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative Justice (RJ) is rooted in compassion, respect, and our shared humanity. It draws from ancient Indigenous and spiritual traditions that recognize a simple truth: we are all connected.

When harm occurs, it does not exist in isolation. It ripples outward—affecting individuals, relationships, and the wider community. Restorative Justice responds to harm by bringing people together in meaningful ways to listen, reflect, and heal.

At the heart of Restorative Justice are these core values:

  • Healing: Restoring balance by addressing the emotional, physical, and spiritual impacts of harm.
  • Accountability: Inviting those responsible to take ownership of their actions and actively participate in making things right.
  • Respect: Honoring each person’s dignity and creating spaces where every voice can be heard—often through Circle.
  • Community: Recognizing our interconnectedness and understanding that the well-being of one affects the well-being of all—again, Circle is central.
  • Growth: Transforming conflict into an opportunity for learning, repair, forgiveness, and personal development.

At its roots, Restorative Justice is more than a practice—it is a way of living. It seeks to restore balance, rebuild trust, and move forward together with intention, care, and understanding. We are naturally connected in the circle of life—and in one another’s lives.

Livin’ Swell. For each other. For our communities. For our planet.

How are vocational programming and restorative justice practices related?

Vocational programming and restorative practices are deeply interconnected. Both center on relationship, dignity, and belonging. Restorative practices create the trust, communication, and accountability needed for people to learn, grow, and work together, while vocational practices provide meaningful pathways for individuals to apply those skills in real-world settings. When woven together, they support not only job readiness, but confidence, purpose, and a sense of contribution to community—helping people thrive at work and in life.
